UMW Toyota Motor has officially opened bookings for the all-new Toyota Yaris Cross in Malaysia, signaling that the long-awaited compact SUV is finally close to launch.
While the company hasn’t confirmed official pricing yet, early dealer information points to two variants: a 1.5 S petrol model estimated at around RM99,900, and a 1.5 S HEV hybrid variant expected to start from roughly RM109,900. If these figures hold, the Yaris Cross will sit right in the sweet spot of Malaysia’s growing sub-RM120K SUV segment.

What We Know So Far
Toyota is still holding back full specs, but early material gives a clearer picture — especially for the hybrid model.
Inside, the Yaris Cross HEV is expected to feature a 10.1-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paired with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. You’ll also get modern touches like ambient lighting, wireless charging, and adaptive cruise control, alongside practical features such as automatic high beam and an EV driving mode.
On the outside, the hybrid variant rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, giving it a slightly more premium stance compared to typical compact SUVs.

Familiar Engines, Proven Setup
Although official specs are still under wraps, the powertrain lineup isn’t exactly a mystery.
The petrol version is likely to use a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine similar to what’s found in Perodua Ativa’s platform relative (DNGA-based models), delivering just over 100 hp and paired with a CVT driving the front wheels.
The hybrid variant is where things get more interesting. It combines a 1.5-litre engine with an electric motor, producing a total system output of around 111 hp. Power is sent through an eCVT, with regenerative braking helping to boost efficiency.
Toyota claims fuel consumption can reach up to 27.8 km/l, which — if accurate — would make it one of the most efficient SUVs in its class.

Colours & Early Details
For now, the hybrid model is expected to launch with five colour options, including:
- Dark Turquoise
- Silver Metallic
- Attitude Black
- Spicy Scarlet
- Platinum Pearl White (with a small premium)
It’s still unclear whether the petrol variant will share the same palette.

New Info: Where It Fits & When It Launches
The Yaris Cross is built on Toyota’s DNGA platform, the same architecture used across several compact models in the region. This keeps costs competitive while allowing for hybrid integration — a key reason why Toyota can price the HEV variant relatively close to the petrol version.
In Malaysia, the model is expected to be locally assembled (CKD), which helps explain the aggressive pricing strategy.
As for launch timing, industry chatter suggests an official debut could happen within the next few months, likely before the end of 2026’s first half, depending on demand and booking response.

Final Thoughts
The Yaris Cross looks set to be a strong new contender in Malaysia’s compact SUV space — especially with a hybrid option priced just above RM100K.
If Toyota delivers on efficiency, features, and pricing, this could easily become one of the most practical entry-level hybrid SUVs on the market.
Now it comes down to one thing:
Will Malaysians choose this over the usual petrol SUVs — or finally make the switch to hybrid?
