Android Auto’s Upcoming Refresh Includes Better Screen Optimization, Widgets and Video Playback Support

At Google I/O 2026, Google unveiled a major wave of updates for its in-car Android ecosystem, bringing significant changes to both Android Auto and vehicles equipped with Google built-in systems.

One of the biggest announcements is a complete visual refresh for Android Auto. Google says the updated interface is now designed to better adapt to different display shapes and sizes used by modern vehicles. Whether a car features a wide panoramic display, a circular screen, or unconventional layouts like BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse models, Android Auto will now scale more intelligently to fully utilise the available screen space for a cleaner and more immersive experience.

The redesign also introduces Google’s latest Material 3 Expressive design language to Android Auto. This includes refreshed typography, smoother animations, updated wallpapers, and a more modern interface overall. Users will additionally gain access to customizable widgets, allowing quick access to frequently used features such as favorite contacts, weather information, garage door controls, and more while navigation remains active.

Google Maps is also receiving a major upgrade through a new feature called Immersive Navigation. The updated system adds a richer 3D visual experience with more detailed representations of buildings, overpasses, and surrounding terrain. Important road information such as lane markings, traffic lights, and stop signs are highlighted more clearly to help drivers navigate complicated junctions and exits more easily.

Another major addition coming later this year is video playback support on Android Auto. Supported vehicles will be able to stream videos from apps like YouTube in full HD resolution at 60 fps directly on the infotainment display. For safety reasons, playback will only function while the vehicle is parked. Once the car begins moving, supported apps can automatically switch from video to audio-only mode, allowing users to continue listening to podcasts or other content without distraction.

Google confirmed the feature will first roll out to selected models from brands including BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Skoda, Tata, and Volvo. Compatible vehicles and apps will also support Dolby Atmos audio for an upgraded sound experience, while media apps such as YouTube Music and Spotify are expected to receive interface improvements optimized for in-car use.

Artificial intelligence is also becoming a bigger part of the Android Auto experience through deeper Gemini integration. Google says Gemini will be capable of understanding context and proactively assisting drivers with tasks. For example, if someone sends a text asking for an address, the system can reference previous conversations and automatically suggest an appropriate reply. Gemini will also be able to help with actions such as ordering takeout during your drive home.

Vehicles running Google built-in software will receive all of these upgrades alongside additional downloadable apps, including Zoom. Google also says closer collaboration with automakers will allow deeper integration between apps and vehicle hardware. This could enable drivers to ask questions about vehicle functions directly or even check practical details such as whether certain items can fit inside the boot.

Google Maps on Google built-in vehicles is also gaining enhanced live lane guidance powered by front-facing vehicle cameras. The system can identify the lane the car is currently traveling in and provide more accurate recommendations when lane changes or highway exits are approaching, improving navigation precision further.
